WHAT IS SMP?
For all its popularity, there are a lot of misconceptions about scalp micropigmentation. People tend to think it’s as simple as tattooing someone’s hairline. While this is true to an extent, SMP is much, much more.
At its most basic, SMP is a cosmetic tattooing technique that helps men and women replicate the look of hair on their scalps. It’s a form of permanent makeup, though don’t let the makeup moniker scare you away. SMP can be used to help with the following conditions:
- A receding hairline
- Male pattern baldness
- Alopecia
- Hair transplant mistakes
- Scalp deformities
- Hair deformities
- And more
HOW LONG DO SMP PROCEDURES TAKE?
Scalp micropigmentation procedures vary in length. They all start with a consultation. This is when you meet with potential clients to go over their goals for SMP, why they’re seeking SMP in the first place, their medical history, and any other relevant information. The SMP consultation process is also a great way to get to know your potential clients and start to form a connection that will lead to referrals down the road.
The actual scalp micropigmentation procedure will usually take two to three sessions. Each session will usually be between three to eight hours, depending on your client’s specific conditions and goals. It’s important to give your clients a minimum of thirty days between each session, so their scalp can heal and be ready for the next step.
A common question we get from students and people considering SMP alike is if the procedures are painful. This makes sense, remember SMP is a form of tattooing. One of the coolest parts of the entire process, though, is that SMP doesn’t hurt at all! This is thanks to a numbing agent you’ll use on your client’s scalp prior to beginning the procedure.
Another question we get asked quite often is how long does scalp micropigmentation last? It can last for up to five years, though everyone’s body is different and individual results are likely to vary. Regardless, it’s SMP is a great long-term solution to thinning hair and much, much more.
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR SMP?
It’s important to know your market. After all, not everyone who contacts you for scalp micropigmentation is going to be an ideal candidate. While SMP can be used to help treat receding hairlines, alopecia, and those other conditions mentioned above – it’s NOT for everyone!
SMP is generally used to help men who are experiencing balding, thinning hair, want more hair density, or are looking for a more dramatic hairline. According to the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, SMP can also be utilized in other ways, including to help women with thinning hair and alopecia.
